Christians are often told they are to be ‘in’ the world but not ‘of’ it. But what does this mean? How can we manage it? Much of the time we find ourselves swerving wildly between becoming too like the world around us, or separating so far from it that we have no possibility of being salt and light. In fact the most common situation for those who have been Christian for a while is to find themselves ‘in’ the world in terms of their attitudes and behaviour, yet ‘out’ of it in the sense of having few non-Christian friends: almost the exact reverse of what Jesus wants!
