How many kings?
Posted: Apr 07, 2010 by Jonty Rhodes
As we’ve said already, at Christ Church we’re seeking to emphasise that Jesus is Lord of all our lives: whether we’re at work, church, home, whether we’re working in a supermarket, government, school, hospital…everywhere and anywhere.
This can cause some confusion: does it mean that church leaders should be making laws, pastors teaching in schools, the church ‘ruling‘ the world? No, not at all. God has appointed different authorities to rule different spheres. So elders lead churches, MPs countries, fathers families, teachers schools and so on. In that sense there are lots of different authorities.
The question is though: how many kings are there? Who should these human leaders be submitting to? Who is Lord of Pride Park, the Westfield, the Royal Hospital, the National Curriculum, Morrisons, Apple, the Houses of Parliament? Paul knew the answer:
For even if there are so-called gods, whether in heaven or on earth (as indeed there are many “gods” and many “lords”), yet for us there is but one God, the Father, from whom all things came and for whom we live; and there is but one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom all things came and through whom we live. (1 Corinthians 8:5-6)
